In just the past few years, fast-fashion (where clothes go from idea to store shelves in just a few weeks)- has birthed a new superstar: Shein. China-based Shein has quickly garnered a loyal following online. Those who love Shein the most include Gen Z and other young people. And luckily for Japanese fashion enthusiasts, Shein offers shipping to Japan.
The biggest competition faces are from other fast-fashion darlings: Zara and H&M. All three stores change clothing selections change frequently. They also sell extremely inexpensive merchandise. This makes frequent purchases of complete outfits accessible to younger shoppers, too. British fast-fashion behemoths ASOS and Boohoo are also Shein’s competitors, as are Missguided and Fashion Nova. All four brands can turn around designs quickly and sell at inexpensive price points.
Shein’s legions of fans include celebrities and musicians like Nick Jonas, Lil Nas X, Tinashe, and Katy Perry. But it’s not the rich and famous that have launched Shein’s cult-like following among dedicated fashionistas. Instead, it’s the “regular” shoppers that frequently post their ultra-affordable shopping “hauls” on TikTok and Instagram.
And although Shein doesn’t have brick-and-mortar stores (though occasionally they’ll launch pop-up locations for promotions) their online-only status has likely helped propel their viral success. Shein can chalk up much of their growth to frequent posting from Gen Z, and catchy content and ads on Instagram and TikTok.
